Through the eye of the photographer: Museo Egizio’s Photographic Archive

The photographic archive opens its doors to the public for the first time and it offers, through the dedicated website, the first part of the rich heritage of images that document the research conducted during the archaeological campaigns led by Ernesto Schiaparelli and Giulio Farina between 1903 and 1937.

The photographic archive of the Museo Egizio consists of over 45,000 images, divided between approximately 25,000 photographic plates, 15,000 slides and 4,500 prints dating back to the 19th/20th centuries.

The recent work of digitization, reorganization and study allows the public to consult the images of the 11 sites investigated by archaeologists at the beginning of the twentieth century, thus reliving one of the most exciting history of the Museum.

The study of the material present in the Archive is still in progress and the site will be constantly updated in the light of new discoveries, with the aim of constituting a documentary source for scholars and specialists.
